The modern day crucible
There will always questions that need answers. Sometimes when looking for specific information leads to related topics, which can be equally interesting, other times irrelevant. Searching for information can be like a maze; sometimes it may be information leading the seeker off course; other times it can lead to path or collection of ideas/ information which the seeker did not anticipant but relevant to cause. Searching as exploration is therefore not straight forward, somehow, somewhere looks can be deceiving. In saying that, the information seeker need to be patient and equipped with the right knowledge, experience and tools to execute the information end-result.Touching on the lecture on 10/10/2022, the guest lecturer, senior librarian, Ms. Shehaamah Mohamed, shared has passion with us in class (online). Hearing her present this particular lecture ,one could tell, that this was not simply her employment to fill the hours of her day, but it was something she is very passionate about and deemed to be harnessing effort on her part. The ACRL frameworks enable educators and librarians to go back to the drawing board and re-work instruction sessions, courses and assignments, in order to empower students academically. Additionally, it helps students to actively contribute to scholarly conversations. Here students learn that information has value, so much that it needs to be respected and given the appropriate recognition where necessary. The research project, the lesson plan and the workshop, which was assigned to students through this course are exact examples of students engaging in learning and teaching, thus ultimately becoming information literate. A collaboration between student and educator is formed. https://doi.org/10.1080/1941126X.2016.1203151
As ten weeks flew past without warning or even a glimpse back, the fat lady is waiting to sing. The last curtain call has finally come to end this chapter of my academic career. (still pondering on the idea of going further) Yet the process of learning and educating others, with regards to information is life-long. One cannot simply stop when the last exam is written. Recapping on what I have leant; the knowledge I have obtained, is so valuable, it cannot be left behind as simply a tutorial, an academic blog post or required assignment. Knowledge is somewhat of a commodity that needs to be transferred from one information seeker to the next.
I am immensely grateful to Dr. King, Prof Zinn and other figures of authority for this course. Beyond lesson plans, workshops and research projects, the course taught me to delve deeper and think objectively. Threshold concepts, which were fed to us as students, little by little, resulted in me gaining new knowledge, which I intend to use not only professionally but in ordinary life as well. Knowledge I have learnt, is something to be shared and I intend on doing just that. Being at the end of this course (including the breaks I took, pregnancy, life failures, losing my mother, 2019) I have grown, similar to the process of a moth growing into a butterfly. When I think of 2022, the term the crucible comes to mind; melting of iron/metal in order to form or shape an object. The pressure of studying and great privilege has formed me into a professional I want to be, not without putting my own personal touch to it.
